How to avoid a service call – Heating

heating service callWhen your heat shuts off on a cold day, most of us reach for the phone to call a heating repair company. Before you make the call, go through our checklist of simple fixes and avoid a service call.

1. Check your thermostat

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve gone on a “no heat” call, only to walk to the thermostat and turn it on! Make sure it is on “heat”, fan in “auto” mode then turn the temperature up (not down)!

2. Check for switches off in the attic

Some furnace switches have been confused for the light switch. Check for breakers off in your electric panel. Note: most homes have more than one panel! Some are even outside!

3. Make sure your gas is turned on

Once again about 10 people a year call with no heat and all we have to do is turn the gas on with our fingers. Make sure you have propane in the tank if you use propane!

4. Make sure all the doors are actually on the furnace

If loose, the furnace may not work. Look for water in the drain pan if it’s an attic install. This will keep the unit from running until the water is gone.

5. If these items fail, please call us for quick service! 919-676-8882
