How to avoid a service call – Cooling
1. Check the thermostat
Make sure its in the “cooling” mode and the fan is in the “auto” mode. Sometimes you can just turn the system “off” at the thermostat, wait a few minutes, and then turn back to the “cooling” mode. No luck? Try putting the fan to the “on” position.
2. Determine if any air is coming out of the registers
Check and replace your air filters if necessary. If there is still no air, but it sounds like it is running, then it has probably “iced up” and needs to be turned off for 24 hours. After the ice melts, you can turn it back on and it will cool again for a few hours until it freezes-up again. If this is happening, please call us, and we can dispatch a technician quickly.
3. Check all your breakers and/or fuses
Important: most HVAC equipment have 2 breakers or more per piece of equipment. Don’t just look at the breakers, turn them to complete off position and then turn back on. If the breaker immediately trips off. Then you need to call us at (919) 676-8882.
4. If your A/C is running but never shuts-off and never quite cools the house
Go outside and look at the coil on the condensing unit. If it is dirty, go ahead and hose it down (you can’t hurt it). Also, feel the larger copper pipe attached to the back of the A/C unit. It should be “sweating” and noticeably col to the touch. If your fitters are clean and it is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter, then your system is operating correctly. It may be slightly undersized for your house or family size. Call us for a tune-up if you feel its not performing as described.
If you have a digital thermostat and it is “blank”
find your furnace or air handler, usually in the attic. There you will find a shallow pan made of plastic but usually sheet metal. There will probably be water standing in the pan and there is a switch that has turned off the thermostat. If you bail out the water, the HVAC system will turn back on. This will buy some time until we can get there and determine what caused the pan to fill up. Call us at (919) 676-8882 for service.
If there is no water there, check the door panels on the furnace. If they get loose, the system will shut down also.
Find out where the condensate line comes outside your home. Its usually a white, PVC 3/4″ pipe. Clear debris and dirt from the area and make sure it is draining correctly. Check for insects inside the pipe. Shove a stick or screwdriver in the exit of the drain to make sure it is clear. Most A/C units put out 1 gallon of water or more per hour. If its not draining, it won’t work correctly. If you still need a service call, contact us 24 hour a day.
