- Nearly 80% of your lost conditioned air in your house escapes into the attic. Just blowing more insulation in does very little good. You need to remove the old insulation, and then seal all the holes and penetrations into the attic by can lights, plumbing pipes, wires, exhaust, attic stairs, dead spaces, etc. When all the air leaks are sealed then the correct insulation can be blown in: 38 inches deep.
- Get yourself on a “time-of-use electric meter” if available in your area. I have saved over $1000 per year for over 20 years and I have changed absolutely nothing that we do in the house.
- Get yourself a tankless water heater (gas). Those things are fantastic and cost approximately $5 to $7 per month to operate. You would be crazy not to.
- If gas is not available and “time-of-use” is not available then put your electric water heater on a timer or get a solar hot water heater.
- Get programmable thermostats if you have fairly regular schedules. They are programmable for all 7 days. We recommend Honeywell products.
- Get your ductwork “sealed”. A 10% leak in your ducts can escalate your Heating and Cooling utility bill by as much as 40%! If you home is over 10 years old, then you need this service.
